US Private Foundation Funder Database — 74,560 Active Grantmaking Foundations (XLSX + CSV)
A ready-to-filter spreadsheet of every US private grantmaking foundation (IRS 501(c)(3), private non-operating) that reported paying grants on its most recent Form 990-PF: 74,560 foundations, sorted by grants paid.
Built for grant writers, nonprofit development staff and consultants who want a starting prospect list without a subscription database.
Each row includes: EIN, foundation name, city, state, ZIP, foundation type, a Patient Assistance (not open grants) flag, NTEE code and category, IRS ruling year, total grants paid, assets (fair market value and book), revenue, expenses, qualifying distributions, whether it makes grants to individuals, and a link to the foundation's IRS record.
Filter in seconds by: state, cause area (NTEE), size of giving, or grants to individuals.
Sources: IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File and the IRS SOI Form 990-PF annual extract, which are free public US government data. We've cleaned, joined, filtered and formatted them into one spreadsheet. Snapshot: October 29, 2026.
Please note:
- Financial figures come from each foundation's latest return in the IRS extract (mostly tax years 2023–2024).
- A few drug-company patient-assistance foundations (which give aid to patients, not grants to nonprofits) are flagged so you can filter them out.
- Many foundations give only to pre-selected organizations, so always check a funder's guidelines before applying.
- Contacts are organizational only. There are no street addresses, contact persons or phone numbers.
- Not endorsed or certified by the IRS or the U.S. Treasury.
