Nico’s Thankful Table — Thanksgiving Retelling Story — Grades K–2
Nico and his grandmother, Lola, shop at the farmers market, cook together, and welcome their neighbors to a Thanksgiving table full of food from many cultures. This free story helps K–2 English learners retell a story in order.
Read It. A 4-part story with full-color pages for display and black-and-white student pages to read and color. The story has no order words, so students figure out what happened first, next, then, and last.
Play It. Go Fish Retelling Cards: each story part has 3 cards — an order word, a picture, and a sentence. Students ask, “Do you have the Next card?” When all 4 sets are found, they lay them out and retell the story.
Retell It.
- Put It in Order: cut out 4 pictures and glue them in order.
- Retell the Story: say it, then write it, with a word bank and the frames First, Next, Then, Last.
- Each student page ends with a “How did I do?” self-check.
Learning Target: I can retell a story in order using key details.
Language Objective: I can say and write what happens in a story in order, using first, next, then, and last.
