The Moral Exception
Paul and Amy encounter two different versions of the same moral accommodation. Paul learns to defend corporate retention and transition logic he once distrusted. Amy, a nurse whose mother has waited weeks for care, accepts access that moves her mother forward while another patient is quietly displaced. Forms, favors, calendars, benefits, appeals, clinic fields, and polished language make each compromise easier to defend because someone the characters love receives an immediate benefit. The novel follows the way an exception can enter a marriage, become routine, and survive after the original justification has faded.
