8. QSR-QUAL-008 — Response Rate, Nonresponse, Bias and Survey Data Quality
Description:
This Master Prompt would focus on evaluating the quality of the responses obtained after survey deployment. It would guide researchers in calculating and interpreting response rates, completion rates, item nonresponse, unit nonresponse, partial completions, missing data, straight-lining, response patterns, speeding, inconsistent responses, careless responding, acquiescence, social-desirability effects, recall bias, self-selection, coverage bias, nonresponse bias, and other threats to survey-data quality.
A major emphasis would be placed on distinguishing high response rate from high-quality or representative data. Researchers would determine who responded, who did not respond, whether response probability differs systematically across participant characteristics, and how such differences may affect conclusions. The broader survey-methodology literature in the collection likewise identifies response rate, sampling strategy, bias and validity as interconnected survey-quality concerns.
