The Picture Troubleshooting Guide
That unnaturally smooth, “soap opera” look isn't a resolution or colour problem — it's the television inventing frames that were never actually filmed, estimating where objects would be between the real ones. HDR is not a command to make every frame brighter; it extends the range available for shadow, midtone and exceptional highlight, and a well-graded film can look correctly restrained rather than dazzling and still be working exactly as intended. And running a console's HDR setup, then switching game modes afterwards, can quietly invalidate the very clipping points that setup just established.
This volume is the series' full authority on picture diagnosis: chapters organised by what you actually see, not by product category — missing or unstable pictures, brightness and contrast faults, colour problems, motion and gaming artefacts, display- and projector-specific issues, streaming faults, and the point at which calibration, repair or replacement is the honest answer. Every chapter follows the same disciplined method: establish a reference state, isolate one variable, test economically, and stop once the picture is credible again.
Audio faults and the combined lip-sync pathway belong to Volume VII. Where a picture symptom also interrupts sound, this volume helps identify which side of the path actually failed before you go looking in the wrong book. What it will not do is encourage endless adjustment in pursuit of a perfect picture that was never the goal — only a credible, reliable one, restored with the least intervention necessary.
