Anna, a retired schoolteacher living a quiet life in California, receives a mysterious package in the mail. Wrapped in brown paper and bearing no return address, it contains a cheap metal heart, crushed like a cupcake wrapper. The object unlocks a long-buried memory: a brief romance in her twenties with a young soldier named Sloan, who once gave her the heart as a souvenir, engraved with the name "Angela," the name he called her.

Soon after, Sloan was drafted into the Vietnam War. Before leaving, he asked to take the heart with him for luck. They promised to write, but Anna never heard from him again. Decades later, she remembers little—only that he came from a small town called Sloan in western New York.

That night, Sloan appears to her—not fully formed, more presence than flesh. He speaks. He remembers. As Anna begins to search for him, the line between memory and reality blurs. The more she uncovers about Sloan's past, the more vivid and tangible he becomes, until he is everything she ever wanted: lover, confidant, and guide.

Driven by longing and unanswered questions, Anna travels to Buffalo, where the package was mailed, and discovers a storage unit containing a suitcase that once belonged to Sloan. Her search deepens, leading her to Vietnam veterans, military records, and finally to Vietnam itself—or perhaps only into the depths of her own mind.

Anna's daughter fears her mother is showing signs of Alzheimer's disease, and even Anna begins to question what is real. Is Sloan a ghost, a memory reshaped by regret, or a man reaching across time? Sloan reveals that the heart was tied to his dog tags—and that it saved his life.

The journey ends with a devastating truth: Sloan was declared missing in action. Anna uncovers the location of his remains and brings the information to the military. Sloan is finally returned home for a hero's burial, honored with flags, helicopters, and ceremony.

As Anna places the crushed heart into Sloan's flag-draped coffin, she sees him one last time—smiling, whole, and at peace—before he walks into a golden light. Whether real or imagined no longer matters. He is home. And Anna will love him forever…and a day.
