The eight months. The love. Before it broke.

An exclusive prequel novella to the Kintsugi Series. Free.

She bought the bowl at eight-fifteen in the morning, fifteen minutes after the gallery in Naha opened. Deep red. Broken once, and mended with gold along every seam. A man was standing beside it who had not come to buy it. He had come to see who would.

What follows is eight months in Tokyo that the novels only ever glimpse in fragments. A coffee cup still warm in the back of a memory. A dinner in February. A word neither of them would say out loud.

It runs in three parts and twelve sections, each one a small room: The Morning After. The First Recording. The Counter. At the Table. The One Who Sees Him. What She Handed Him. Until the Tea Cooled. The Calculation. The Cup, Still Warm.

It begins the morning after the gallery in Naha, and it ends at three fifty-eight on a September morning, which is the exact moment Kintsugi: The Breaking opens.

You can read it as an overture, before the novel. Or you can read it after, as the answer to the question the novel holds in its hands for three hundred pages: what, exactly, was broken.

It works both ways. That is the point of it.

Roughly eleven thousand words. It contains references to grief and the death of parents, racial prejudice as part of the protagonist's lived experience, intimacy rendered off the page, and one calculated act that the rest of the series spends two books answering for.

The Kintsugi Series continues in Kintsugi: The Breaking and Kintsugi: The Gold.
