The Day the Bell Didn't Ring | School-Wide PBL Stage Play PreK-5 | Student-Run Script & Production Kit
The Day the Bell Didn't Ring is play 1 of 8 in a school-wide project-based learning series. On Monday morning the school bell is silent. Without it, nobody knows if school can start. Two student reporters set out to solve the mystery and visit everyone who keeps the school running: the custodian, the front office, the bus driver and crossing guard, the cafeteria team, the school nurse, the librarian, teachers and the principal. Along the way they learn that a bell only tells time; people make a school. In the end the custodian reveals the old bell was being replaced, and the whole school rings in the day together.
Your students don't just perform it. They produce it. Your whole school becomes a student production company, with meaningful jobs for every grade from PreK to Grade 5 (or 6): actors and chorus groups, stage crew, set design, marketing and advertising, social media planning, ticket sales, front of house, logistics and community partnerships. Teachers, specialists, the principal, custodian, cafeteria team, nurse, counselor, PTA/PTO, families and community partners all have a role, while students lead.
Big Question: How can we, as a student production company, show our community the people who make our school work?
