ABSTRACT
Al-Bukhala’ in Modern and Contemporary Arabic Criticism Discourse
Al-Bukhala’ (the misers) is one of most important literary works of AlJahidh in the third Islamic century. In his masterpiece, Al-Jahidh presents
the morals and deeds of the misers in an exceptional creative narrative
way making mock of them. Critics have got into a dispute over both the
content and form of this book. To some, it is a collection of articles, plays,
or stories, or pave the way for their establishment whereas others think it
is a critical work that attempts to correct the deviant social values in a
magnificent literary style.
Many modern and contemporary critical studies have dealt with this
book- each in its special approach or method. Al-Bukhala’, however, has
always impressed scholars of different schools, yet a rich source of
controversies providing a generous amount of bliss to its readers and
researchers. The numerous colorful studies that tackled this work have
inspired the present researcher to scan them trying to fill the gaps they
left behind or pick up what they missed.
The dissertation is composed of an introduction and three chapters. This
structure, actually, has been imposed by the nature of the previous
studies that investigated Al-Bukhala’.
The introduction provides some technical definitions explained and
introduces a clear idea about the nature of this study, which can be listed
under what’s labeled “criticism of criticism”. It also gives some
explanations about the resource under study, the problem of its typology,

and identifies the time-limit within which the key points of the research
occur.
In Chapter One, the light is shed on the studies that made on AlBukhala’ as a fiction having the elements of a story or a narration. It is of
three sections. The first section investigates the views that dealt with the
work under study within the domain of fiction. The second section
approaches the work from the view of modern narrative studies, whereas
the third section delves into the discourse structure of Al-Bukhala’.
Chapter two probes the studies which believe that the book is basically a
critical work. The first section touches upon the studies that approached
Al-Bukhala’ sociologically (in theory and practice) whereas the second
section deals with the studies that probed it within the frame of
psychology applying the theories of this science on the contents of AlBukhala’. Section three waffles on the aspect of satire in the work for
being -the book- a critical that attempts to cure many socio-psychological
epidemics.
The image of the miser, the setting, and the image of the other have
been depicted in Chapter Three within three sections relying on the
references available. The dissertation concludes with a bunch of results
as fruit of what has been discussed throughout the research.
