Many children are not bad at independent play.

They have simply been given too little space to practice it.

Independent play is where children learn to make choices, tolerate boredom, solve small problems, and trust their own ideas without an adult directing every moment.

But it does not always begin peacefully.

Sometimes it begins with complaints, wandering, or “I’m bored” delivered with award-winning tragedy.

That does not mean the routine is failing.

Often, it means the child is adjusting from being entertained to becoming engaged.

As parents and educators, we do not need to fill every quiet space with activities, screens, or suggestions.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer is rhythm, calm space, fewer decisions, and the patience to let play grow.

I created Independent Play at Home as a gentle guide for parents who want less screen panic and more peaceful play. Because children do not always need more entertainment.

Sometimes they need protected space to remember what their imagination can do.
