R.O.O.T. – Regenerative Offshore Osmotic Trunks
System Overview
The R.O.O.T. system uses genetically modified Avicennia marina-commonly known as the grey
mangrove-to extract freshwater from seawater using natural salt-exclusion mechanisms in roots.
These roots are modified to form extended networks with no aerial growth and deposit water into
artificial trunk-like tanks. The collected freshwater is then passively transported to onshore tanks
using capillary tubing. Nutrient support and anchoring are provided via a coastal biochar compost
base. This is a zero-energy, decentralized freshwater reclamation network deployable at scale
