Reading Fluency Progress Tracker K-2 | WCPM, Accuracy & Comprehension | Editable Excel + PDF
Make reading fluency progress monitoring easier with one editable Excel tracker.
Are you spending too much time calculating reading fluency scores, updating spreadsheets, and comparing student assessments? This Reading Fluency Progress Tracker helps you organize your K–2 reading data in one place, so you can focus more on your students and less on the math.
Designed for Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade, this reading assessment tool tracks words correct per minute (WCPM), reading accuracy, and comprehension. Enter each assessment once, and let the workbook calculate the results and update your connected tracking sheets, student progress reports, and class dashboards.
Use it throughout the school year to record baseline scores, monitor growth, compare BOY/MOY/EOY results, and prepare for reading intervention or progress-monitoring meetings.
What can you track?
Reading Fluency (WCPM)
Record timed reading assessments and monitor changes in words correct per minute. View a student's baseline, latest result, and growth over time.
Reading Accuracy
Track the percentage of words read correctly to help you review reading performance alongside fluency.
Reading Comprehension
Record comprehension responses and monitor the percentage of questions answered correctly. Keep comprehension visible as its own measure rather than combining it with fluency or accuracy.
Student Progress
Compare each student's first dated assessment with the latest result. Review all three measures side by side to get a clearer picture of reading development.
BOY, MOY, and EOY Assessments
Organize beginning-, middle-, and end-of-year data and compare student results with editable grade-specific fluency norms for Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade.
Classroom Data
Review assessment counts, students assessed, class status distributions, average WCPM by grade, and progress trends using the built-in dashboard and graphs.
What's included in the Excel tracker?
The workbook contains 14 tabs, including one hidden Lists tab, organized around one central Fluency Assessments log.

- Start Here: Quick-start guidance, editable norms, and status thresholds.
- Student Roster: Organize up to 40 students with grade, teacher, student ID, and group.
- Fluency Assessments: Record up to 500 assessment entries. WCPM, accuracy, and comprehension percentages calculate automatically.

Meet the Speed Counter dashboard
Want to review a student's reading data without switching between multiple sheets?
The Speed Counter displays three live ring dials for the selected student's WCPM, accuracy, and comprehension. Additional graphs show the student's WCPM trend, class averages by grade, and seasonal progress.
Use these visuals when reviewing student performance, preparing for a data meeting, or identifying areas that may need a closer look.
How the tracker calculates results
Enter the assessment information once, and the workbook handles the calculations.
- WCPM: Passage words × 60 ÷ reading time in seconds.
- Accuracy: Words correct ÷ words read × 100.
- Comprehension: Correct answers ÷ questions × 100.
- Baseline: The first dated assessment for the student and measure.
- Current: The latest dated assessment.
- Growth: Current result minus baseline.
Saved passage information can supply the total word count to the assessment log. Undated entries are excluded from baseline calculations, and blank assessment rows remain blank rather than being counted as zero.
Automatic progress status
The workbook assigns written status labels based on the configured thresholds and norms.
- Not Assessed: No dated assessment is available for that measure.
- Beginning: The result is below the Developing threshold or applicable norm.
- Developing: The result meets the Developing threshold but remains below the Mastered threshold.
- Mastered: The result meets or exceeds the applicable Mastered threshold or norm.
WCPM status uses grade-specific norms, while accuracy and comprehension use editable thresholds. You can adjust these settings on the Start Here tab to suit your assessment approach.
