National Utah Day Activities
This engaging and inclusive Utah-themed activity day is designed for individuals with developmental disabilities in a day program setting. The goal is to promote social interaction, creativity, and functional skill-building through a variety of hands-on and enjoyable activities centered around the state of Utah.
1. Money Skills Activity (Utah Marketplace Simulation):
Participants will take part in a structured “Utah Marketplace” activity where they practice identifying coins and bills, counting money, and making simple purchases. Staff can set up a mock store with items such as snacks, small toys, or Utah-themed pictures (e.g., mountains, national parks, animals). Individuals will be guided to “buy” items using play money, helping to reinforce real-life money management and decision-making skills in a supportive environment.
2. Utah Art Collage:
Participants will create a personalized Utah-themed collage using pre-cut images, magazines, printed pictures, and craft materials. Themes may include Utah landscapes (mountains, deserts), wildlife, state symbols, or favorite activities. This activity encourages creativity, fine motor development, and self-expression. Staff can provide adaptive tools (e.g., glue sticks, larger scissors) as needed to ensure accessibility.
3. Utah Word Search Activity:
A simplified and visually accessible word search will be provided, featuring Utah-related words such as “mountain,” “desert,” “park,” and “snow.” Participants can work independently or with support to locate words, promoting cognitive skills such as attention, visual scanning, and word recognition. For individuals needing additional support, options like highlighted word lists or larger print versions can be offered.
Program Goals:
- Enhance functional life skills (money handling, decision-making)
- Promote creativity and self-expression
- Support cognitive development through structured activities
- Encourage social interaction and group participation
Adaptations & Supports:
Activities will be adapted based on individual needs, including one-on-one assistance, visual supports, simplified instructions, and sensory-friendly materials to ensure all participants can engage meaningfully and successfully.
This Utah Activity Day provides a fun, educational, and inclusive experience that supports skill development while celebrating a unique and engaging theme.
