The Reed Chart — Oboe Reed Making & Adjustment Record

Making a great reed is often a process of small adjustments over time. The Reed Chart is designed to help oboists keep track of that process—so you can remember exactly how a reed was made, how it changed, and what worked.

Instead of relying on memory, use one chart for each reed and build a clear record from the initial setup through several days of playing and adjustment.

The Reed Chart includes space to track:

• Shaper tip, staple, tie length, cane, and gouger
• Gouge measurements for the middle, ears, and thread
• Weather and temperature
• Five days of dated notes and observations
• Separate diagrams for the left and right blades, allowing you to mark exactly where you’ve worked
• Today’s adjustments and what you want to address next
• General notes for each individual reed

Whether you’re experimenting with different setups, trying to make your reeds more consistent, or simply want to better understand why certain reeds work better than others, this chart gives you one organized place to document the entire process.
