Reading Fashion: The Gaze Vol. I
READING FASHION — THE TRILOGY
By Marianna Fioretti
Fashion gives visible form to the values, desires and contradictions of its time. Learning to read it means paying attention to the relationships between images, bodies and the cultural worlds they inhabit.
Reading Fashion brings together three volumes: The Gaze, The Body at Work and The Afterimage.
Conceived as a connected journey through looking, embodiment and memory. The trilogy approaches fashion as a language through which identities are negotiated, social distinctions become visible and ideas about the present take shape. Written for students, creative practitioners, educators and curious readers, the series invites a more attentive engagement with the images and objects surrounding us, connecting fashion to broader questions of culture and everyday life.
VOLUME I — THE GAZE
Every fashion image directs our attention. A pose, a silhouette, a carefully framed body: each makes certain things visible and leaves others outside the frame.
The Gaze opens the trilogy with an invitation to examine how we look at fashion. Looking is a cultural practice, shaped by the images we encounter, the conventions we inherit and the positions from which we observe. What appears beautiful, desirable or familiar carries assumptions that deserve closer attention.
At the centre of this first volume is the relationship between seeing and interpreting: how images acquire meaning, how representations influence our understanding of bodies and identities, and how our own perspective participates in that process.
For readers working with fashion, communication and visual culture, The Gaze proposes a starting point for more deliberate observation and informed interpretation. It encourages the habit of pausing with an image long enough to consider what it asks us to see and why.
