General Information:

This shawl was inspired by my memories of my scuba diving days and my fascination with watching the silvery bubbles of air rushing to the surface through glorious blue waters. It’s an asymmetric triangle knitted sideways from a few cast on stitches. It is mostly knitted in stocking stitch with rows of slipped stitches to create the pattern and it’s finished with a contrasting i-cord bind off.

MATERIALS:

Yarn:
MC: Sock weight, ~150 g, 520 m / 567 yds.  Shown in BlackElephantUK, colour Ocean Warrior.
CC: Sock weight ~60 g, 221 m / 242 yds.  Shown in Chester wool Superwash Merino Single Ply, colour Natural.

Yarn choice: When choosing your colours, it is important to have a good contrast (light vs dark in very different colours) between the MC and CC. Resist the temptation to buy two yarns that complement each other because they share colours in common as the pattern will be quickly lost. I used a very bright variegated yarn paired with a neutral which works really well.

Needles and notions:
3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle minimum 32 inches / 80 cm long, or size required to obtain gauge (main needle).
3.75 mm (US 5) circular needle minimum 32 inches / 80 cm long, or 0.25 -0.5 mm larger than main needle for mosaic knitting and i-cord bind off.
Tapestry needle to sew in ends.

GAUGE:
25 sts and 33 rows in stocking st and 25 sts and 41 rows in mosaic stitch, to 4 inches / 10 cm after blocking.
It is important that the number of sts to 4 inches in stocking st is the same as for the mosaic st.

knit, purl, slip stitch purl-wise, k2tog, ssk, kfbf, i-cord.
