Earth Day Art Lesson Heart Planet Earth Art Project Line Pattern Background
This Earth Day art lesson is designed especially for younger students. Students create a colorful artwork of Planet Earth with a heart at the center, a symbol of love and care for our planet.
Students draw the Earth and explore its continents and oceans, then add a large decorative heart. The background becomes a study of line and pattern: students divide the page into sections and fill each space with different lines such as zigzags, loops, dashed lines and curved lines. It is a good fit for Kindergarten to Grade 2 art classes, spring art units, environmental awareness activities, homeschool and sub plans.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN
Students practice drawing the planet Earth, learn how artists use line and pattern to create visual interest, experiment with oil pastels and watercolor paint, and explore shape, color and composition. Along the way, they reflect on how people can protect and care for our planet.
You can demonstrate the drawing steps yourself or project the step-by-step pages so students follow along. The reflection and discussion pages round out the lesson, and the finished artworks make a bright classroom Earth Day display.
