The challenges and difficulties with which we meet in life are never intended to make us bitter but better people. Adversity strengthens our souls. Resentment and bitterness can only blur one’s vision of the future.

Mothupi’s contended peaceful life was thrown upside down when his father, mother, and sisters were brutally murdered by a mob in Komati village. He was the only family member who survived the onslaught. Mothupi’s father who also had to flee his village at an early age under painful circumstances was his coach, mentor and role model.

It is not what happens to us that matters most but what we do about it. Many people believe that life is not fair, that it does not grant the same opportunities to all but the few. They blame it all on creation. This cut deeper through to any reason they can find that mankind is created with a seed that makes him vulnerable to easily believe a lie than the truth and the psyche of deriving pleasure in hurting others than helping them. The truth is that life becomes what we make out of it.

While other people’s hearts could be hardened by the hardships, challenges and tragedies with which they meet in life, others decide to take beneficial lessons from their circumstances and learn to be compassionate, generous, and kind. They decide to do things to and for others not because they could but because they care. Gratitude helps us to look for good things in every situation, no matter how bad or painful the situation could be. With pain comes an opportunity to look at things differently – a reflection upon one’s life in a deeper and more benevolent and constructive way. No amount of pain, suffering, fear, and failure can deter a determined soul.

The story is clearly intended as a teaching tool rather than a novel and thus aspects such as the development and descriptions of characters – protagonists and antagonists are not as important. However, what the characters do is more important in revealing the resilient nature of the human spirit and we learn these attributes from the characters’ trials, tribulations, and successes. The story offers an enjoyable insight into the African cultural traditions, village life and the dangers and beauty of wildlife in the African countryside. Human nature is human nature and wherever one might find oneself, the central questions and dilemmas are universal and the ethical aspects that arise from the story bear reflecting upon whatever tradition one is from.

“The Adventures of Mothupi” touches on life’s real challenges which readers can relate to regardless of their background. The book can easily be mistaken for a children’s book but offers many valuable lessons that even adults can benefit from.
