STCW Personal Safety and Responsibility (PSSR)

PSSR is theory only course for mariners who need foundational Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR) knowledge for shipboard duties. It includes safety practices that align with applicable STCW requirements and relevant OSHA principles, though this course is NOT currently USCG-approved.

After taking the course, learners will be able to respond to emergencies, work safely, prevent pollution, communicate effectively, and support a responsible onboard safety culture. Formal course approval depends on the applicable maritime administration or training provider.

Course Objectives

Demonstrate safe responses to common shipboard hazards, emergencies, and alarms.
Apply effective communication, teamwork, and chain-of-command practices on board.
Use personal protective equipment and safe work practices appropriate to shipboard tasks.
Explain how fatigue, stress, impairment, and unsafe behavior affect maritime safety.
Evaluate shipboard situations and select actions that protect people, the vessel, and the marine environment.
