Piece structure is determined by the sequencing of a random number generator, initiated at the start of every two-bars. phrased by the violinist, prompting an audible "click"sound". Performers will recieve a visual cue indicating the bar to perform next. Every four clicks (four two-bar phrases), a larger string of numbers, in the sequences of 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, will be fed into the random number generator.

The random number generator will be pressed a total of 24 times, at which point, the performers will promptly drop out and wait for the next round of audience members.

This is a somewhat UNFINISHED work from my days as an early Masters Student, hence the discounted price. It will require some degree of technical know-how to correctly attenuate the random number generators, as well as a handful of microphones and a mixer for the show. On my end, I only have a handful of working prototypes in Max, with no semblance of a UI to be seen. A Substitute for Understanding was inspired by Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Rooms, and is intended to be performed in a hall of mirrors under candlelight. That said, I am a measly composer, and have yet to get my hands on the resources to realize the piece in full, only in simulation. If you purchase this piece, send me an email at nab9527@nyu.edu, and we can discuss how to fit this to your own artistic vision, installation or otherwise. I'd love to help you bring this piece to life!
