This Midnight Kitty art project is a New Year art lesson where students experiment with oil pastels and paint. They create a whimsical nighttime scene of a mysterious cat under a starry sky, exploring color blending, texture and oil resist painting.

It is a low-prep lesson for classrooms and homeschool settings. Step-by-step instructions, a finished example, a rubric and a bulletin board display option help you guide students through a creative start to the year.

HOW TO USE IT

Look over the lesson plan for the steps and materials, and gather your supplies in advance. Read through the visual and text step-by-steps, and consider making a sample yourself so you are ready to help students. Photocopy the student handouts you need, such as the step-by-steps and rubrics.

Print the poster sample in color and show it before the lesson as your hook. Then show the PDF on a digital projector or under a document camera, or use it as your own guide while you demonstrate. Every step has both a visual and a text description, so students can follow along clearly.
