Popping Your Sex Therapy Cherry
This is a guide to talking about sex with clients
Talking about sex is really scary. It’s something therapists don’t receive much (or any) training on, it can feel embarrassing, and we’ve likely internalised a lot of messages about it that are negative, confusing, or factually incorrect.
Research indicates that health professionals, including psychologists, avoid discussion of sex with clients as they feel it’s difficult to talk about or outside their professional scope. This avoidance can look like waiting for clients to initiate discussions of sex, or deflecting questions by suggesting they speak to a specialist (e.g., sex therapist).
This resource was created to give you the information and confidence you need to support clients with sexual issues. It certainly won’t have all the answers, but will hopefully be a useful starting point on your sexpert journey.
