About:
The Carraroe Shawl is named after the city of Carraroe, in County Galway, Ireland, which is the hometown of my Auntie Bridie, who worked in the Old Knitting Factory before moving to the US as a young woman.
The Old Knitting Factory building dated from 1906 and was initially built as a knitting school. The school taught local women the art of knitting, which provided much-needed employment and income for the area. The house is known as “An Sean Monarcha” in Irish which translates to The Old Factory.
The knitting tradition is deep in this area as well as in my family, so when looking for a name for this delicate, yet classic shawl, I looked to the town of Carraroe.
This two-skein, asymmetrical-triangle shawl— with both written and charted directions—is easy enough for an adventurous beginner knitter but engaging enough for an advanced one. Filled with easy lace, stripes, and a garter border. This timeless design is very wearable either around the shoulders traditionally or worn around the neck like a scarf.
Note: There is an option for an alternate i-cord edging and i-cord bindoff.
Needle:
US 6 (4.0 mm), 40” (100 cm) circular needle or needles needed to get gauge
Suggested Yarn: Lichen and Lace, 1 Ply, Fingering weight, 1 skein each of two colors, [100% Superwash Merino; 400 yards (370 m)/ 100 grams] or any fingering weight yarn of your choosing.
Sample uses:
Main Color: Natural, approx. 360 yds (329 m)
Contrast Color: Sugar Plum, approx. 370 yards (338 m)
Gauge: 22 sts/30 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in Lace Section pattern using US 6 (4.0 mm) needles or whatever size needle gives you the fabric you would like.
Other Notions: 2 stitch markers for edges, 21 stitch markers for lace (optional but suggested for ease), darning needle.

• Knit, purl, cast on & bind off
• Increasing (yo, kyok, s2kp)
• Working from charts (written directions available)
