Return from the Deep (淵還) — Tar Entrance & Exit [VRChat / Modular Avatar]

From the deep it returns. To the deep it goes.

A black pool opens at your feet. A figure wrapped in tar rises from it, holding your exact shape. The tar peels away and drips back into the pool — and you are standing there.

An entrance and exit gimmick for VRChat avatars. One menu button to rise from the tar, one to sink back into it.

Return (entrance, ~10 s)

1. The pool opens — Tar spreads beneath your feet.
2. Rising — Your tar-covered form rises out of the pool, shape intact.
3. The black figure — You stand covered in tar. The wet black catches the light.
4. Shedding — The tar runs off from the head down and falls in drops.
5. Revealed — You appear. The pool quietly recedes.

Sinking (exit, ~7 s)

Tar climbs from your feet and covers you, and you sink into the pool still holding your shape. Nothing below the surface is visible, so it never looks like you are clipping through the floor. The pool closes. Nothing is left.

Features

• Rises and sinks without melting or collapsing — it keeps your silhouette.
• Works in whatever pose you're in: sitting, arms raised, anything.
• Pool size adjusts automatically to wings, tails and other wide parts.
• Works with any avatar shader — the tar is a separate mesh, so your materials stay as they are.
• Weapons from tar: tar forms a blade in your hand, then peels away to reveal the weapon. Includes a Tar Blade, and works with your own handheld weapons too (tar coverage is detected automatically).
• Plays on load: rises from the tar when you join a world or switch into the avatar (can be turned off).
• 5 sound effects, muffled like the deep sea.
• Everyone around you sees and hears it.
• One-click install from the Tools menu.
• Inspector settings: edge glow color, speed, pool and drops on/off, sound replacement.

Install

Modular Avatar based. In Unity: Tools → 天禍堂 (Tenkado) → 淵還 (Return from the Deep) → 「選択中のアバターに導入」 (Install to selected avatar), then upload.

The tar meshes, animations and menu are generated at upload. Your original avatar is not modified.

Unity and in-game menu labels are in Japanese; Install_EN.txt gives the English meaning of each one.

• Humanoid avatar

Please note

• Meshes are duplicated for the tar, so polygon and material counts go up. Your performance rank may drop.
• Uses 2 bits of synced parameters.
• Uses custom shaders. Viewers who block shaders won't see it correctly.
• Depending on viewers' safety settings, some effects or sounds may not show.
• Your nameplate stays visible (VRChat limitation).
