Aromatherapy for TCM practitioners:

An Essential Oil blend (never a single oil) must fit the person, not the presenting symptom). Is it viral (wind cold), fungal (wind damp) or bacterial (wind heat)? A receptive terrain allows condition of pestilent chi from airborne or skin contact, or contaminated foods: Pestilent factors: after incubation, an inflammation occurs within the body. Three stages: Initial stage of struggle between Upright Chi (body's Immune system) and the pestilent factor (fever stage). Second (critical) stage: Exhaustion of Upright Chi and chronic episodes in the body (hides in organs). Recovery stage: body tries to rebuild Upright Chi, restores fluids. Discussion of mediating factors: Status of lung and kidney chi (hormonal system), thyroid gland enhancement, adrenal gland shock from pathogenic factor. Stomach yin: (lining of the gut) weakening of mucosal lining allows quicker inflammation of the blood and lymph from the gut. Liver chi (liver blood): regulating the cyclical cycle of chi movement (ability to detoxify) to expel the viral die-off. Emotional state (Psychoneuroimmunology) affects capacity of person to repel infection.  Acute phase: use oils for powerful moving effect (use top node oils: monoterpenes- pine, evergreen, eucalyptus globula plus citonella for diffusing). Dry brush inside of elbows and knees, apply oils, then hot shower to stimulate expulsion of pathogenic factor. A comprehensive approach is presented with oil blends (top, mid and base node oils) for specific purposes, e.g. blend of oils for viral acute phase. Specific areas of the body for applying oil blends are presented, along with accompanying adjuncts like hot compresses.
