Video Class: How To Sew a Dress Without a Pattern

Make a dress you want to wear, using clothes you already own as a starting point.

A self-paced video class where I show you how to plan and sew your own relaxed dresses, from the first ideas to the finishing details. Learn to create pattern pieces from an existing garment, choose your bodice, neckline, sleeves, and skirt, and bring those choices together into a dress of your own.

Includes 11 video lessons and my dressmaking PDF guide + workbook.

You have an idea of what you’d like to wear. How do you begin?

Maybe you have a dress you love, but wish it had a different skirt or longer sleeves. Perhaps you’ve been saving pictures, collecting fabric, or watching sewing videos, wondering how to turn those ideas into something you can actually make.

That’s the process we explore in this class.

I’ll show you how I work from clothes I already own, make decisions about the shape and details, and sew dresses without a commercial pattern. You don’t need to arrive with a complete design. We’ll work through the choices one at a time.

A starting point from your own wardrobe

An existing top or dress can give you a useful place to begin. I’ll show you how to transfer its shape into pattern pieces and use those pieces as the starting point for your design. From there, we’ll explore how changing the neckline, sleeves, waist placement, or skirt changes the whole dress.

We’ll also think about what you actually enjoy wearing: how much room you like, where you want the waist to sit, and how the dress will go on and off.

The focus is on relaxed, wearable shapes, with construction choices such as elastic, buttons, and pull-on styles.

Four dresses, different possibilities

Throughout the class, I use four linen dresses to show different ways of approaching bodices, necklines, sleeves, skirts, and pockets.

The lessons are organized by these parts of a dress, so you can explore the options and choose what you’d like to use in your own project. You might start with a simple gathered dress, or combine sleeves from one example with a skirt from another.

You don’t need to make all four dresses. They’re there to help you understand the choices and plan a dress of your own.

Is this class for you?

This class is for you if you’d like to make your own dresses and want a practical way to begin designing them.

It will particularly suit you if you:

  • Enjoy relaxed dresses and natural fabrics.
  • Want to use favorite clothes as a starting point.
  • Would like more freedom to choose the details.
  • Have some sewing experience but feel unsure about planning a garment yourself.
  • Prefer being able to pause, revisit a lesson, and work at your own pace.

You should already be comfortable threading your sewing machine and sewing a basic seam. You don’t need experience drafting patterns.

The class focuses on relaxed dressmaking. Close-fitting tailoring, structured bodices, and zipper construction are outside its scope.

Along the way, I explain my decisions, show changes I make, and talk through the things worth checking before moving on.

A few things you might be wondering

Do I need a commercial sewing pattern?

No. I show you how to create starting pattern pieces using an existing garment.

Do I need to know exactly what dress I want to make?

No. The opening lessons help you find a direction and work through the design choices.

Will I be making all four of your dresses?

The four dresses are teaching examples throughout the class. You can use their features as inspiration and choose which techniques to bring into your own project.

What equipment do I need?

A sewing machine and basic sewing supplies, including fabric scissors, pins or clips, a measuring tape, marking tools, and an iron. You’ll also need material for transferring your pattern pieces, a suitable reference garment, and fabric for your dress.

Can I use fabric other than linen?

I recommend a woven fabric such as cotton or linen that is not stretchy.

Is the PDF guide included?

Yes. You don’t need to buy it separately.

Start with an idea. Work through one decision at a time.

If you’ve been wanting to make your own dresses, this class gives you a way to begin and practical lessons to return to as you sew.

Choose a starting garment, gather your ideas, and let’s work through the process together.
