Preface
The completion of this thesis has taken me to places I have
never been before. In general I have enjoyed immensely the
opportunities to think, debate, teach, read lots of good books
and write. It would not have been as interesting or challenging
without the company of a lot of stimulating and some special
people. Firstly I am grateful to colleagues at the Department of
Public Administration for their support and patience with the
completion of this research. In particular, the company of
Menno Fenger, Marine Allix and Bente Bjornholt was always a
delight, and they could even offer sound advice and intelligent
comments. Conversations with Albert Meijer and Mirko Noordegraaf in the early stages of my research kept me on my toes,
while more recently Merlijn van Hulst has also played a role in
keeping me culturally attuned. Conversations with Professor
Paul Frissen provided an important source of inspiration at a
time when I was feeling somewhat overwhelmed with the project at hand.
In Sweden I am indebted to my frequent email contact with
Dr Goran Sundström who was always willing to answer
promptly my questions and even correct my Swedish. During
my research I was able to spend time at the University of Canberra, Australia and was warmly received by Professor John
Halligan, who together with Professor Roger Wettenhall were
very quick to subject my research ideas and arguments to
healthy scrutiny. Dr David Rowlands also allowed me to delve
into his collection of documents and was ever willing, even by
email and in summer holidays, to give advice on the Australian
scene. Outside of Public Administration Lisbeth Eelens Noordegraaf and Rachael Dunstan provided me with intellectual
stimulation, friendship and support, in one way or another,
throughout the period of my research. I was lucky enough to
know Jovanka Gögos whose creativity and enthusiasm ensured
that I could have a gorgeous book cover in lightning speed–
something I had never expected given the abstract nature of the
contents. The completion of the thesis and my capacity to rise
above the stuff elegantly would not have been possible without
the professional guidance and support of my promotors both
Professor Christopher Pollitt and Dr Sandra Van Thiel. They
have continually inspired and challenged me with their own
academic achievements and quality of output. They have
known how to get the best out of me with rigor, good humor
and kindness. I have already missed our meetings for what
seems a long time.
I also have to mention my parents and family because they
somehow continued to manage to find ways to support me and
keep me smiling and soothed about the writing/research
process from a really long distance. I am lucky with my parents.
Anja Mels was frequently at hand to help with childcare and
house stuff, without which there would have been even more
disorganization, late nights and tardiness. Finally, I am forever
grateful for the patience and love of Robbert and Anna. My
desire to write this thesis has invariably meant that I was
literally, and too often figuratively, elsewhere working or in my
thoughts. Also Robbert did a lot of last minute lay out which
was more than relief, while Anna always provided good
distractions and knew how to keep me smiling. Completion was
so much easier knowing you were both still waiting for me.
