Interpreter with a pearl earring
Inspired by Johannes Vermeer‘s Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665), this painting reimagines the celebrated portrait through the story of Krotoa (c. 1643–1674), one of the most significant figures in early South African history. Krotoa and Vermeer (1632–1675) were contemporaries, living in the same century and dying only a year apart, yet their lives unfolded in vastly different worlds connected by the reach of Dutch influence.
Rendered in earthy greens and natural tones rather than Vermeer‘s iconic blue, the portrait emerges from layers of maps, marks, and textures that speak to memory, place, and the passage of time. The pearl becomes a symbol of a life lived between cultures—shaped by both connection and division. Through this reimagining, Krotoa steps into the frame of a Dutch masterpiece, creating a dialogue between the Netherlands and the Cape, and between the stories preserved in museums and those carried by the landscape beneath Table Mountain.
