STRETCH: Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series Practice

by Daniel Alan Baker

STRETCH is the yoga component of the STUDY • SIT • SWEAT • STRETCH system.

Rather than offering a random collection of stretches, STRETCH is built around one established practice: the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series.

This beginner-focused edition preserves the order and structure of the Primary Series while making the practice adaptable to different experience levels, schedules, and physical abilities. Start with one Sun Salutation A and one Sun Salutation B, move through the standing sequence, and progress into the Primary Series as far as you can practice safely and with control.

Difficult lotus positions, binds, arm balances, backbends, and inversions can be modified rather than forced. Repeated vinyasas can also be reduced or omitted—especially during the seated portion—as you build endurance, mobility, strength, and familiarity with the sequence.

The program includes the Primary Series in order with Sanskrit and English posture names, beginner modification principles, shorter practice options, progression toward Full Primary, Savasana guidance, a simple practice log, and links to external visual posture references.

The principle is simple:

Learn one sequence. Respect its order. Modify it intelligently. Practice what you can today. Build toward more over time.

Joint rotations and general mobility warm-ups are intentionally kept outside STRETCH. Those belong in the martial-arts or SWEAT warm-up, leaving this module focused specifically on yoga.

This handbook is a practice framework, not a substitute for qualified yoga instruction. Advanced lotus positions, deep binds, arm balances, backbends, and inversions should never be forced.
