Turn their love of gaming into a reason to read, experiment and think for themselves.

In Press Start: From Player to Game Maker, your Player explores history, brain science and online decision-making through hands-on challenges while designing and coding a game they can proudly share.

Created for ages 7 to 11 and grades 2 to 5, this homeschool STEM and social studies unit connects reading, writing, math, art and coding across eight worlds. The project gives those skills a purpose: an original, playable game to launch for family and friends.

Learning that goes beyond the game

• History and geography: Map ancient games, examine historical clues and meet inventors whose ideas changed how people play.

• Science and critical thinking: Investigate the brain, run a reaction-time experiment and explain what the results can and cannot show.

• Economics and math: Explore competition and pricing, read graphs and compare career earnings without confusing exceptional success with typical work.

• Reading and writing: Discuss books, develop interview questions, write a game manual and present an idea to an audience.

• Digital citizenship: Recognize pressure and missing information online, practice setting boundaries and learn when to ask for help.

• Coding and design: Create an original character, build three playable levels in Microsoft MakeCode Arcade, test code and use feedback to improve the game.

Players also investigate eight careers in gaming and choose a skill they want to develop. By launch day, they have made creative decisions, worked through problems and built something other people can play.
