Reign of the Chroms
Far away from their home world, a young couple of a highly advanced civilization escape the broken mother ship in a space shuttle, hoping to find a livable planet. They encounter a humanoid species living in their stone age. Using Wrix, the holorobot, they introduce modern technology on the planet. When Wrix is given too much freedom to speed up evolution of the inhabitants, he begins to act like a god. The end result is destruction of the ecosystem.

After he got off the train in Zupcan, he headed straight for the headquarters of the government. The laser gun in his pocket was set to kill. He had acquired the weapon from a drug dealer who even showed him how to use it. He had told the dealer he was after a cop.
Dobias saw the first guard at the government building when he arrived at the arcade leading to one of the side entrances. The guard was looking intensely in the other direction; Dobias was able to sneak in behind him.
...
Wrixman stood up and smiled.
“Well, young man, what can I do for you?”
Dobias suddenly pulled out his weapon and pointed it at the Chancellor.
“I doubt you could do anything for me that I’d like,” Dobias said in a very disgruntled manner. “You’ve done way too much already! It’s time that your actions stop.”
The young man pulled the trigger, releasing a thick beam of laser from the tip of the gun. The beam hit Wrixman in the middle of his chest. However, as soon as the beam hit, a sizable hole opened up in Wrixman’s chest, allowing the beam to pass through without touching any part of the body. The hole disappeared as soon as Dobias took his finger off the trigger. Wrixman was totally unharmed.
“You might as well put that thing down,” the Chancellor said jovially. “I assure you it doesn’t look too good in your hands.”
“What the heck!” Dobias shouted. “Can I believe my eyes?” He fired again. At this time he aimed the beam at Wrixman’s head.
“Wow!” Dobias uttered when he saw Wrixman’s whole head disappearing, allowing free passage to the fiery beam.
