First Grade Sentence Writing Unit 2 | Sentence Workshop | Writers Academy
Help your first graders turn their ideas into complete, meaningful sentences—and learn how to make those sentences clearer.
Writers Academy Book 2: Sentence Workshop is a four-week writing unit with 20 sequenced lessons and 305 pages of teaching materials, illustrated mentor stories, partner activities, student writing pages, and assessment tools.
Join Fox and Raccoon as students explore complete thoughts, choose useful details, practice capitals and punctuation, and prepare writing to share. Each lesson connects a specific sentence skill to something children want to communicate.
Four Weeks of Sentence-Writing Instruction
Week 1: Complete Thoughts
Students learn that a sentence communicates a whole idea. They name who or what, finish incomplete thoughts, arrange words in a meaningful order, and check that words and pictures agree.
Week 2: Grow a Sentence
Students choose clear actions and add details that tell where, when, or which one. They practice adding information that helps the reader picture the intended event.
Week 3: Boundaries and Purposes
Students practice sentence beginnings, word spacing, and ending punctuation. Lessons explore telling sentences, real questions, helpful directions, and messages that express strong feelings.
Week 4: Connect, Revise, Share
Students practice joining related thoughts with support, writing two connected sentences, repairing unclear meaning, and preparing a page to share. A final writing sample helps teachers notice growth and plan the next step.

Reusable Activities That Support the Lessons
The resource includes a Complete Thought Sort, Sentence Builders, a Detail Workshop, and Sentence Repair activities. Preparation directions, practice materials, and teacher checks help you organize activities for repeated use.
Support the Writer’s Own Ideas
Students have opportunities to talk, draw, rehearse, write, reread, and explain their choices. Teacher guidance includes ways to support emerging writers and extend learning while keeping the child’s intended meaning at the center.
Mentor stories are read aloud, and adults can read unfamiliar activity words. Children can participate through speech, gesture, drawing, home language, or their usual communication tools.
Practical for Classroom Use
Use the unit during your first-grade writing block, with small groups, or for targeted sentence-writing support. No outside storybook purchase is required. Some reusable activities require cutting; optional lamination or sleeves can help materials last.
Save ink: Project the colorful stories and classroom visuals on your SMART Board or classroom display. Print only the student pages and practice materials you need.
