This Ceramic Pinch Pot Art Lesson introduces students to the pinch pot method. Step by step, students hand-build a functional or decorative pinch pot while exploring pinching, additive sculpting and surface design, with the option to add feet, texture or patterns to make it their own.

It is a hands-on, low-prep clay lesson for elementary, middle school and homeschool art classes. Please note that the lesson demonstrates how to build only. Finishing is a separate process, so you can glaze, underglaze or paint in whatever way suits the resources and budget you have.

Look over the lesson plan and gather your materials in advance. Review the visual and text steps, and consider making a sample yourself so you are ready to help students. Photocopy the step-by-step handouts and rubrics you need.

Print the example in color to show students what they are making. Then project the PDF, show it under a document camera, or use it as your guide while you demonstrate. Every step has both an image and a text description.
