Pihta stranded mittens knitting pattern

Pihta mittens are worked from the bottom up in stranded knitting, apart from the single color cuff. The stitch pattern is simple and rather easy to memorize. There are mostly only one or two consecutive stitches in one color, so you can keep the tension of the yarns constant with minimal effort.

Finished sizes:

The stranded part of the pattern has 74 stitches in the small size, 82 stitches in the medium size and 90 stitches in the large size.

Yarn:
Austermann Step (420 m/459 yd per 100 g)
Dream in Color Smooshy (411 m/450 yd per 113 g)

Yardage:
In the mittens shown in the photos, the main color is red and the contrast color is white.
Small size: Main color 168 m/184 yd or 40 g, contrast color 110 m/119 yd or 26 g.
Medium size: Main color 189 m/207 yd or 45 g, contrast color 126 m/138 m or 30 g.
Large size: Main color 210 m/230 yd or 50 g, contrast color 147 m/161 yd or 35 g.

Needle size:
2.5 mm (US 1.5) or the size you need to get the gauge. 3.5 mm (US 4) for casting on. You will need either circular or double pointed needles.

Gauge:
39 sts and 36 rows per 10 cm (4 in) in stranded knitting (pinstripe) without blocking.

Other supplies:
A piece of scrap yarn at least 15 cm (6 in) long, a stitch marker and a tapestry needle.

The charts in the pattern file are on horizontal pages, while the rest of the pattern is vertical. For printing there is a separate file available with the charts only. Two of the pattern files are in English, the other two are in Finnish.
