Garlands of tulip-shaped flowers loop around and around the Tulip Parade Hat in bursts of color and texture.


Only one color of yarn is used at a time. The ‘tulips’ are created using slipped stitches and slipped stitch cables. The hat begins with the brim with either a long-tailed cast on or the Italian Tubular cast on. Knitters may choose between a short, single brim or working the ribbing longer to make a doubled brim that can fold over. Decreases worked in pattern help to shape the crown.


This hat is a perfect project for a variegated yarn plus a solid for the background color. It could also be worked in two solids or in a single color.


For a snug fit, choose a hat size that is a couple of inches smaller than one’s head circumference. To make a slouchier hat, choose a size that is roughly equal to one’s head circumference. Knitters might also lengthen the hat by working the Tulip pattern more times.


Pompoms are always a fun addition!

For a snug fit, choose a size that is about 2” / 5 cm smaller than your head circumference. The sample is the 19” / 48 cm size on a head circumference of approximately 21.5” / 55 cm

Needles

US Sizes 6 and 7 / 4.0, and 4.5 mm double-pointed or circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge, plus an additional circular needle 1 or 2 sizes smaller if using the Italian Tubular cast on

27 sts and 32 rows per 4” / 10 cm in Tulip pattern after blocking
