How it plays

Every golfer carries five ratings: Driving, Approach, Short Game, Putting and Clutch. Each round leans on a different skill and a different test. Thursday rewards the iron players, Friday puts the putter under fatigue, Saturday hands the links over to the wind and the big drivers, and Sunday comes down to nerve. Roll 3d6, add the skill modifier, read the result. Get hot and your golfer Charges. Come apart and he Capitulates. The 6th, Birkdale's brute, is one of the hardest par 4s in Open golf and quietly takes strokes from anyone who relaxes.

A full championship sims in about half an hour. Follow one golfer round by round, or run the whole field and sweat the cut line. Birkdale is a links, so it gives up birdies at the 14th and 17th and takes them straight back at the 6th, 13th and 18th. If Sunday ends level, the app settles it with a sudden-death playoff. Prefer to slow down? The hole-by-hole app lets one or two players walk a single golfer round Birkdale with the dice in about fifteen minutes.
