Too Much Money: ESL Partner Speaking Mystery (B1–B2)
The Grade 8 Haunted Corridor made more money than it should have. Three people sold tickets, one hour each. Who made the mistake, and what was it?
HOW IT WORKS
This is a partner speaking mystery for pairs. Student A has the ticket book and the three sellers' notes. Student B has the price board (with $1 off for a costume), the costume count and the money counted each hour. Neither sheet solves the mystery alone: A has no prices or money, and B has no ticket numbers. Students keep their sheets secret, ask and answer questions in their own words, compare what they find out and work out what each hour should have earned, find the hour that doesn't match and explain the mistake. The answer is fixed and fully explained in the answer key.
LEVEL AND LANGUAGE
Written for English learners at CEFR B1–B2, grades 5–8. Language focus: numbers and prices (twelve adult tickets at three dollars), maths talk (times, plus, minus) and explaining (That's $9 too much because …).
PREP AND TIMING
Print page 2 for each Student A and page 3 for each Student B. Keep pages 1 and 4 for yourself. No cutting and no extra materials. About 25 minutes.
HALLOWEEN WITHOUT THE GORE
Spooky, funny and school-friendly: no blood, no violence, no frightening images.
