22nd Bomb Group Fights Back from Townsville
The 22nd Bomb Group USAAF was the first complete US Air Group of men and aircraft to reach Australia during WWII. They were initially equipped with 50 brand new B-26 Martin Marauders, most of which were flown to the Townsville area from Hawaii, with the first leaving Hickam Field on 22 March 1942.
The 22nd Bomb Group arrived in Townsville and was initially based as follows:-
Headquarters Sqn – Stockroute Airfield
2nd Bomb Sqn – Reid River Airfield
18th Reconnaissance Sqn – Reid River Airfield
19th Bomb Sqn – Stockroute Airfield
33rd Bomb Sqn – Antil Plains Airfield
Later Woodstock Airfield and Iron Range Airfield were used by the 22nd Bomb Group
