The Ticket to a New Life

How I left Berlin behind, searched for freedom in Dubai - and learned that no place in the world can save you from yourself.

A true story about new beginnings, ambition, belonging, and the search for a life beyond the ordinary.

The second realization: Sometimes we have to get what we long for in order to understand what we were really searching for.

There was no farewell.

No big party.

No tears at the airport.

No crowd of people seeing me off and wishing me luck.

In fact, hardly anyone knew what I was really planning.

Officially, I was going to Dubai for seven months.

A job at Expo.

An adventure.

The kind of thing you do before eventually returning home.

At least, that was what everyone else thought.

I knew better.

Deep down, I knew I would not come back.

At least not to the life I was leaving behind.

Still, I had kept every door open.

My apartment was sublet.

I had not quit my job.

There was a Plan B.

But my heart had already chosen Plan A.

I packed two suitcases.

Took the train alone from Berlin to Hamburg.

Boarded an Emirates flight.

And knew:

This is the beginning of my new life.
