About the program

This is a 5-week program for singers interested in learning more about jazz music, singing jazz techniques, and improvisation.


We will go through the basics so you can understand what singing jazz entails, learn more about basic theory, interpretation, and improvisation skills, as well as different styles in jazz.


This is a good start-up program for singers who already have basic singing techniques and wish to advance in the jazz area.

About the teacher

Maja Savic is a professional jazz vocalist and a holistic voice coach based in Paris, France.


Maja has over 15 years of performance experience and has been teaching voice for years combining various techniques which makes her approach a Holistic one.


She is currently based in Paris, performing and teaching on regular basis with her Jazz and Brazilian projects, as well as teaching Meditation, Breathwork, Relaxation, and many other techniques that help you find balance and peace in life. She developed her current approach and method during the last several years in Paris, with a focus on empowering singers to be confident on stage and embrace their individuality.

SCHEDULE

WEEK 1 - INTRODUCTION TO JAZZ

In this module, we will learn more about the basics of jazz, how to read charts, recognize progressions, count off tunes and learn the form!


We will cover:

  • What is a Jazz standard?
  • Form
  • Rhythm
  • Jazz styles
  • Basic theory - jazz chords, progressions, understanding the charts/lead sheets, intervals

WEEK 2 - SINGING JAZZ BASICS

In week 2 you will learn more about jazz singing technique, phrasing, how to pick your tune, find the right key and start building your repertoire.


We will cover:

  • Choosing your repertoire
  • Popular Jazz standards
  • Choosing your key
  • Speech-level singing method
  • Jazz phrasing
  • Guidelines for singing jazz


WEEK 3 - LET'S LEARN ABOUT SWING!

In week 3 you will learn a new song (or we can work on a song you know) that is in a Swing style, and we'll dig a little deeper into how to sing in this way.


We will cover:

  • Learning about and understanding Swing
  • How to sing a swing tune
  • Learning about different tempos and Counting off a swing tune (in different tempos)
  • Interpretation methods
  • Improvisation basics
  • You will learn a new song (or we can work on a song you know)


WEEK 4 - SINGING A BALLAD

In week 4 you will learn how to interpret a Ballad tune in a jazzy way, make the interpretation interesting and you will get a new tune to work on.


We will cover:

  • Singing a Jazz Ballad
  • Popular ballads in Jazz music
  • Choosing your story and working on the interpretation
  • You will learn a ballad (or we can work on the one you know)


WEEK 5 - SINGING THE BLUES

In our final week you will learn more about the Blues - the form, scales we use in this style, different interpretations of the blues, and finally - you will write your own blues tune!


After this module, you will receive a certificate of completion.


We will cover:

  • Learning about Blues
  • The Blues Form
  • Blues and pentatonic scales - workout and improvisation
  • Exploring blues in jazz and different styles
  • Learning a blues tune
  • Writing a Blues tune!
