The Chechens are an indigenous people of the North Caucasus, primarily inhabiting Chechnya in the Russian Federation. Some scholars suggest that their ancestors trace back to the Kura-Araxes culture, which spread from the South Caucasus into the North Caucasus. This theory is based on archaeological finds and genetic studies linking ancient Caucasian tribes to the modern Vainakh peoples. The Kura-Araxes culture was known for its distinctive pottery, metallurgy, and early urban settlements, elements of which are reflected in later Caucasian traditions.

Chechens are known for their hospitality toward guests, called “Kunakhalla”, and code of bravery and honor, called “Nokhchalla” in their native language.

Chechens traditionally live in Teips, which are small clans with their own infrastructure and leaders. Benoy is one of most influential chechen teips, and a famous chechen military resistence leader “Baisangur of Benoy” was a member of this teip.

Building defensive fortresses has been a chechen tradition for many millenia. Some of the oldest chechen fortresses are Nakhch-Kala, Tsoy-Pede, and Kezenoy-Am.

Chechen food often features meat, cooked over fire or in a stew. Aside from food that originated in Chechnya, chechens also have borrowed culinary traditions over time from Russians, Georgians, Arabs, and Turks. So it is common to see Chechens eat chebureki or pelmeni, even though these foods originated elsewhere.
