There isn't much you can do to avoid using Subjunctive tenses in Portuguese and you would be severely limited in your ability to express yourself in Portuguese without it. It can be confusing and hard to grasp (especially for native speakers of English and other languages that don't have a Subjunctive or in which the Subjunctive works differently), but the good thing is that it is not impossible to learn.
