GHK-Cu (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine copper(II)) is a small, naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide found in human plasma, saliva, and urine.

What It Is and How It Works

  • Natural decline: Discovered in 1973, its levels in human plasma drop from about 200 ng/mL at age 20 to 80 ng/mL by age 60, mirroring the body's slowing tissue repair capacity.
  • Carrier function: It acts as a carrier peptide that binds and delivers copper ions to cells, which acts as a vital cofactor for enzymes responsible for collagen and elastin cross-linking.
  • Cellular signaling: It signals fibroblasts to synthesize collagen, modulates matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) to clear out damaged tissue, and reduces inflammation and free-radical damage.

Common Uses and Benefits

  • Skin health: Used widely in topical serums and creams to improve skin firmness, enhance elasticity, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and support wound healing.
  • Hair support: Included in some topical scalp formulations to stimulate hair follicle size and encourage growth
