Franklin & Armfield's trade runs through these pages twice over. The brig United States brings Alexandria's great "Report and Manifest" — 141 people, nearly every one under a full surname, James B. Franklin shipping 75 of them to himself at New Orleans, the sheet's own foot total "One Hundred & Forty One" matching exactly. And the brig Comet sails again from Alexandria with 89, Armfield to Franklin, reconciling to the person: 88 numbered entries plus an unnumbered infant the clerk skipped his numbering to fit in — one of two boys named John Henry, both nine months old, on the same ship.
The schooner Lafayette out of Norfolk carries 190 people on six separate manifests in one hull, her sheets full of mothers with their children bracketed beside them: Norah with Sam, 4, Fanny, 2, and Westly, seven months; Rosetta with Peter, 11, and Lavinia, six months.
The Topaz out of Baltimore carries 43 Maryland term-service people, her printed purpose "sold or disposed of as Slaves" struck through and rewritten "to be held to Service or Labour," bound upriver to Natchez. Her clerk ticked the Male column for all 43, women and girls included — the marks stand as ticked, flagged on every row, because on this form they cannot be trusted.
Also in these pages: Celia, 16, whose name column reads "had a child on board" — her baby exists only in that line and the inspector's endorsement; Hiram, 19, who "was not on board"; Robert, who was "taller than mentioned"; James or Hercules and Chance or Chester, each carrying two names as written; and the Splendid's mothers — "Mary & her yellow infant," Betty "& two children" — 24 named and 5 unnamed making exactly her certificate's twenty-nine.
Every entry gives the name as written, sex, age, height, class as written, shipper or owner, and residence, vessel by vessel, with an alphabetical index. Where a manifest and its certificate disagree, both readings are printed — disagreements and all. The free guide and the Complete Set download hold the guide and every installment so far in one file.
