Have you ever thought of making mini furniture for your puppets?
In this course, you’ll learn how to design and create a custom miniature armchair - a perfect prop for marionettes, dolls, photography, puppet shows, or simply as a charming handmade decoration.
Who is this course for?
This course is great for hobby crafters, puppet and doll makers, or anyone curious about the magical world of miniature furniture. By the end, you’ll have a unique, hand-stitched armchair your puppet will love.
(Note: this course is also available on Skillshare. If you happen to have a Skillshare membership, you can find it there, too.)
What you'll learn
- Basic Construction. We’ll start by measuring your puppet and then building a basic armchair construction (seat, backrest and arms) of the appropriate size.
- Upholstering and Tufting. You’ll learn how to cover your mini armchair with fabric, and tuft the backrest and arms with beads or buttons to give it that cozy, elegant touch.
- Assembly. I’ll teach you how to sew the seat, arms and the backrest together by hand, using the invisible stitch.
Materials and Tools
- Foam pieces
- A piece of flat wood as a steady base
- Contact glue
- Basic craft tools: ruler, scissors, knife, marker, needle and thread, sewing pins, tape measure (or a piece of twine), pliers
- Fabric for upholstering (I used an old T-shirt)
- Beads
Safety disclaimer: some tools that I am using in this course can be dangerous (especially the sharp ones - knife, pins, ...)! Please be very careful when working with all the tools. You undertake this project at your own risk. The course is intended for adults.
Just a quick note: this tutorial is for a toy armchair only. Real armchairs for people are built very differently, so please don’t use these instructions for full-size furniture.
Your puppet deserves a throne - or at least a comfy chair! I’m excited to see what you’ll come up with. Let’s get started and make something truly unique :). Below you can watch the intro video:

Barbora Mihoková
Marionette-making has been a part of my life since 2013, though puppets have surrounded me since childhood - my mum is a puppeteer, so I grew up in this magical world. I started out by creating personalized marionettes based on photographs. These days, most of my time goes into our family puppet theater, and while I still craft marionettes, now I design my own characters. Alongside that, I write tutorials and enjoy experimenting in my creative work. You can discover more about me and my puppet world on my website: www.mariones.eu, or on social media.
