The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is a collection of 196 Sanskrit sutras (aphorisms), that lay out the philosophical and practical principles of yoga. 


The sutras were written by Patanjali, a sage who lived in India in the 2nd century BCE.


The Yoga Sutras are divided into 4 padas (limbs):


1- Samadhi Pada (The First Limb) deals with the nature of consciousness, and the practice of meditation.


2- Sadhana Pada (The Second Limb) discusses the eight limbs of yoga, which are:

  • Yamas (Moralities)
  • Niyamas (Observances)
  • Asanas (Postures)
  • Pranayama (Breathing Exercises)
  • Pratyahara (Withdrawal of the Senses)
  • Dharana (Concentration)
  • Dhyana (Meditation)
  • Samadhi (Enlightenment)


3- Vibhuti Pada (The Third Limb), describes the powers that can be attained through the practice of yoga.


4- Kaivalya Pada (The Fourth Limb), discusses the nature of liberation and the attainment of moksha.
