The Missing Chapter™ | Creative Writing & Novel Study Activity | Grades 6–8 | 2-Page Printable
THE MISSING CHAPTER™
Same Story. A New Chapter.
What if your favourite novel contained a chapter nobody had ever read?
A conversation that never happened.
A secret the author never revealed.
An adventure hidden between two chapters.
What would YOU write?
Welcome to The Missing Chapter™, a creative writing adventure that challenges learners to step into an author's shoes and write a brand-new chapter for an existing novel.
But there's a catch...
Their chapter must fit the original story!
Learners must consider the characters, setting, plot and important events before creating a chapter that feels as though it has always belonged in the book.
Perfect for Grades 6–8, this engaging two-page printable encourages imagination while developing essential reading comprehension, literary analysis and creative writing skills.
📖 THE CHALLENGE
Learners become authors of a missing chapter!
They must decide where their chapter belongs, identify an unexplored moment in the story and create an original addition that respects the author's fictional world.
PAGE 1 — THE DISCOVERED MANUSCRIPT
Before writing, learners investigate six important elements:
01 — WHERE DOES IT BELONG?
Choose where the missing chapter fits into the original story.
02 — WHAT WAS NEVER TOLD?
Identify an event, conversation or moment the author left unexplored.
03 — CHARACTERS INCLUDED
Decide which characters will appear and what roles they will play.
04 — SETTING
Establish where and when the new chapter takes place.
05 — THE CONTINUITY RULE
Identify two important facts from the original story that the new chapter must not contradict.
06 — WHY THIS CHAPTER MATTERS
Explain what the new chapter adds to the story and why readers would benefit from discovering it.
PAGE 2 — THE LOST PAGES
It's time to become the author!
Learners create a title and begin writing their missing chapter on a dedicated manuscript-style writing page.
Their challenge?
Write a chapter that feels as though it has always belonged in the original novel.
The page concludes with:
THE AUTHOR'S SECRET

❤️ WHY TEACHERS WILL LOVE IT
The Missing Chapter™ encourages learners to move beyond simply recalling events from a novel.
To create a convincing new chapter, learners must demonstrate that they understand the original story.
They need to consider what characters would realistically say and do, where events could fit into the plot and how their writing contributes to the larger narrative.
The result is an activity that combines creative freedom with meaningful literary understanding.
And because the resource is not tied to a specific novel, teachers can use it with different books throughout the year.
The story may already be written.
But somewhere between its pages, another chapter is waiting to be discovered.
