Epoxy Chessboard Plans

This chess board is built out of cedar wood and pigmented epoxy. Each square is cut from a single cedar 2x4, arranged in the mold, and cast in a resin pour. The wood grain flows through the light squares, while the dark squares are solid pigmented epoxy — no paint, stain, or veneer. The example throughout the plans uses cedar wood but any type of wood could be used to make this product.

The surface is sanded and finished with a hand-spread epoxy coat, creating a smooth, glassy finish that protects the wood and enhances the color. The board measures approximately 16" × 16" and has a solid, substantial feel.
