The Maxine Cycle, Volume II: The Optimization

The Optimization follows the system after it has learned to move beyond the immediate presence of a ruler. Through The Order Before Command, Persia: The King Is Far, and The Glass That Shattered, administration travels across empire, markets, cities, standards, labor, exchange, and public memory. The volume traces how distance, classification, and repeatable procedure increase the reach of authority while separating human consequence from the person who issued the original command.
