How the Lesson Works:

  • Step 1: Introduce the Philosophers
  • Students learn that ancient Chinese thinkers had different ideas about leadership, morality, and social order. This sets the foundation for comparing philosophies like Confucianism, Daoism, Legalism, and Mohism.
  • Step 2: Choose a Learning Structure
  • Use the format that best fits your classroom:
  • Stations / Rotation Model – Students rotate through five stations, one per philosopher
  • Expert (Jigsaw) Groups – Students become “experts” on one philosopher and teach their peers
  • Step 3: Quote & Philosophy Matching Activity
  • Students work in pairs or small groups to match philosophers to their ideas and quotes, then translate each quote into their own words. This encourages deeper analysis and understanding of Ancient China philosophy.
  • Wrap-Up Discussion
  • Students reflect on which ideas surprised them, which philosophies would be hardest to follow, and how these beliefs still influence the world today.

Teacher Benefits:

  • Flexible and easy to differentiate
  • Encourages discussion, collaboration, and critical thinking
